Dinorwic slate Quarry overlooks Llanberis - photography by Michael C Coldwell

The Roof of the World

A mountain was stolen...

This landscape photography project looks at Dinorwic Quarry in North Wales, and the ways in which the land in this part of the world has been transformed and haunted by the legacy of the slate industry.

Images of the devastating impact to the natural environment, and the tiny derelict miners’ cottages, are contrasted with the wealth this early industrial process amassed and concentrated in the form of Penrhyn Castle.

The castle itself is a facade. A fake Norman keep built by Richard Pennant, whose vast fortune was made on the backs of sugar slaves in the West Indies and the large scale industrialisation of slate quarrying. Slate from here roofed the British Empire.
